ManFlick Presents. Apple.

Well we have made it, we have had a great time filming our film and it feels like the end of a special partnership between myself,Oli Clubb, Joe Sullivan and Sam thorpe.
It took use 4 weeks, £ edits, 83 apples but we made it!

Sounds good?

I take NO! Credit for the sound track it was all the work of Oli who is a genius ( I listened to it and was there while he made it). I dont know alot about the construction of music so here;s what Oli said about the piece:
It starts of very light and dreamy with a chorus of 'Ahhs' to lighten the mood. Some bright happy motif's played on. A guitar rhythm in the background helps add to the happiness of the sound. This melody is the signature apple motif and returns a few times in the piece. The next part of the section is a piece on stacatto strings to make it seems a little more emotional but casual.

The next section is very different. A pedal in the background mixed in with an eerie glockespiel solo makes this passage a little haunting and unsettling. This breaks into a melodic minor section which is meant to connote the confusion felt by the cyclist and the uncertainty the apple faces after it is thrown onto a bench.

This soon errupts into the happy opening sequence. We get an added Flute melody that represents the little girl drawing the face on the apple.

The drunken section is made up of unnerving pizzicato strings, purely to get across the drunken confusion of the 3 men out on the town. The pizzicato strings also give the scene a dainty edge as though there is no real danger for the apple.

The next section is something different and is made up of lots of descending sequences. There is a happy sound. It has a sense of inquisition about it which is meant to represent the dog.

The next section after this is a haunting glockenspiel melody that is an intertextual reference to Witness using the same motifs and melodies. This ties in well with the scene as the tramp is an intertextual refrence to Witness.

This then defers back to the main melody giving the scene the happiness and sense of voyage of discovery we see on the first section.

We then get an atonal descending sequence with loads straight into the climatic ending which is quite dissonant in parts.

This is finally ended with a sad and lonely piano riff detailing the demise of the apple and its grave sacrifice being overlooked by the man.

The sound track is great , it helps to express the emotion of the apple to the audience.

enjoy

Ancillary Task: Magazine Review

As mentioned our second piece is a magazine article we wanted to stick to the theme of keeping it simple, so the article looks clean and is made up of 3 colours, white, green and black. Joe provided the words.

Ancillary Task: Promotional Poster

We decided that we would make a poster and a magazine article as our ancillary Tasks. The film poster we have kept simple this is keeping with the style of the film as it is a simple idea, we would of been stupid and would not of conformed to the idea of a shot film if we had created a image and action heavy poster. As we wanted to make a simple poster we wanted a simple picture, so we went to photography lad in school and used their lighting and white backdrop to get the perfect image.

First draft results are back...

We handed our film in today on the whole we got a good response but there are a few things we need to change:

We had to re-shoot the last couple of scenes as there was a problem with lighting( we already knew this).

Editing and continuity issues throughout the film had to be sorted.

Add more varied shots.

focus more on the apple.

These are going ot be easy to address and should be sorted in no time.

The final day of filming! oh... and the last pod cast.

So today we filmed our last scene, it was a re-shoot as we had some continuity problems where the fruit guy comes out of the shop.We had to film the original scene on to different days as the light went the first time, the only problem was it had been raining the day before meaning we had to go back today and re-shoot. We got all the shots we wanted, and have spent some time putting the footage together and going our last podcast.

Nearly there!

well we are coming to an end of filming so heres a slide show of pictures from 'behind the scenes'.

">

Risky business

As always we had to do a risk assessment for filming. At every location there wasn't any thing that struck us as dangerous, but in the shot where we have the tramp crossing the road we obviously had to be aware of traffic but it was very light so didn't effect us.

A list cast!...... and props

We have 11 members of cast including our selfs, we decided that we would each have a cameo in the film. Oli and Joe play the school boys, Sam plays the fruit sales man and i play the tramp. The rest of our cast is made up of family and friends, Oli's mum plays the lady in the supermarket, Sam's Dad plays the van driver and has the only speaking part and my Dad plays the business man. The rest of the cast were friends, Oli's girlfriend plays the girl on the bike, our friends kyle, carl and hayden play the drunk lads and Mike playes the dog walker the dogs called alfie.

We used quite alot of props mainly apples, we have used about 70 apples! Other props used were:

Disposable camera
Jack Daniel's bottle
bottles of beer
A dog
tennis ball
A bike
waitrose shopping
Van
fruit boxes

Its not the most exciting list of props but its all we needed.

Costume
The costume for every was wear your normal clothes and thats what every one did, the costumes weren't constructed a part from two, mine (the tramp) and my Dad (business man). for the people who saw witness our as film then they would have noticed that i was the photographer in it, and I am wearing the same clothes we did as an intertextual reference to our pervious film.

Oli put together this great slide show that expresses my points:

About time!

We have now filmed about half of the film, we have encountered a few problems as we had to change the location of some of the shots due to accidently filming on private property in windsor, we over came this very easily as all we did was move down the street and got better shots than we planned.

Storyboards

This is a simple slideshow with all of our story boards.

what and when?

This is our shooting schedule.

C-c-c-changes!

We made a last minute change to the story, we have added about 5 shots in-between the girl putting the apple on the bench and the runner picking the apple up. We have also started filming and everything is looking good!

Location hunting

Heres a short videos explaing our location choices.

A brief synopsis

Heres a very basic and creative synopsis of 'apple'

what's the story?

We have a come up with a more detailed story line of 'apple'

An Apple in a supermarket is bought by a lady who proceeds through town after her shopping trip. After traveling through town she is makes her way across a bridge. Two school children from the opposite side of the bridge are playing around and run across the Bridge, one of them knocks into the woman and this causes the apple to fall out of her bag and off the bridge.
At this moment a woman on a bike rides underneath the bridge and the Apple handily lands inside her basket.
The cyclist rides up the main street and after a while realises the Apple is in her basket, confused, she takes it out and throws it onto a nearby bench.
A child and parent also walking along the street happen to go past the apple.
The child picks up the apple and decided to draw a smiley face on the apple. The parent sees this and tells the child to throw the apple away.
The child then leaves the apple on another bench.
That night the apple stays on the bench and in the early hours of the morning three men who have just been out on the town come across the apple. Drunk and rowdy one of them sees the apple and finds it hilarious due to the smiley face. He then asks his companions if he can have his photo taken with the apple. After this event takes place the trio move on.
The next morning a jogger running near the bench stops and sits down so that
they can tie their shoes. They notice the apple and decide to take it with them on the run, eventually throwing it down a staircase.
The apple bounces down the stairs and eventually rolls towards a dog walker and their dog. The dog mistakes it for a tennis ball and runs at the apple, picking it up and running off. The dog walker catches up with their dog and rips the apple out of the dogs mouth and throws it.
A drunken tramp then sees this and decides to go after it. The tramp then walks in along the road before taking another swig of whiskey and in the act of passing out throws it further down the street.
A fruit vendor coming out of an establishment sees the apple and assumes it is part of his shipment and must have fallen out. The fruit vendor place it with the rest of his apples and goes off to deliver his next shipment at a train station. On his way to the entrance he falls over accidently throwing out the box. It lands on the road.
During this occurrence, a business man is coming off a train. In a rush and not looking where he is going he head’s out into the road towards oncoming traffic. It is as this moment the apple saves his life as just before he steps into the road he steps in the apple, and stops walking. Because he stepped on the apple and did not carry on walking he did not walk into the path of the car and therefore was not hit by it; in short all the people in the film contributed the to the prevention of this mans death, and the apple was the tool used to carry out this act of luck. Or random anomalies, which ever way you seem to see it.

if you don't succeed pick your self up and try again!

We started filming and got quite a way into the filming of our short film, we did a quick edit and weren't happy with it. We went back to the drawing bored a came up with a cracking new idea for a short film, the basic premiss of the film is how peoples actions effect others, in the films case these peoples actions save a mans life. The film follows the journey of the apple from being bought in a shop and ending up saving the mans life.

Short films target audience, institutional context and film festivals.

The target audience for short films is very small, this mainly due to the subject matter that short films output. Unlike big hollywood block busters that appeal to a mass market e.i. James Bond, short films present a message to challenge beliefs and face issues like mental health or human greed forcing the audience to think. Short films are 90% of the time made by small independent film makers as an outlet to show their talent. The short film genre doesn't really follow any basic conventions unlike other genres such as action which have manly conventions some of these being, big budget high action entertainment, heavy use of CGI and special FX to create a hight action film.
A typical action film is die hard:

Ive watched loads of short films and the only convention i can see is the delivering of a message, for example 'black Button'.

The film like many others challenges human greed, the main character has the choice to push a button and get £10m or leave, the catch is if he takes the money someone will die. He pushes the button and he is the one who dies, he could of just left the room and lived but because of his gre proberly ed he dies. This is a typical short film.
I believe that the target audience for short films would mainly be media students and people who are involved in the creative world. If i wasn't a media student i probably wouldn't even bother to watch the short films available.

Because the films have such a small target audience there isn't an opportunity for them to be shown in big cinemas, the only outlet they have apart from the internet is film festivals, most major countries have them according to www.britfilms.com major hollywood blockbusters are shown at the festival along-side short films, the most famous would have to be canes. Film makers win various awards for their work.

Location hunting

On saturday we spent the day looking for locations to shoot our film. We need an office, bedroom, kitchen , coffee shop and an out side area for a car to be parked.

We first went to FM global which is a small office complex in windsor, we couldn't get internal shots due to it being the weekend. We were able to get some out side shots:

We also visited my Dads office in Stains, although it was the weeked we could still get in. We all agreed that we would defo be using the office for the interior shot as the office was perfect.

We also require our character who is a very successful business to be seen getting into and driving a car, we have 3 cars in the running, Sam's dad's car, a Landrover Discovery HSE.

My dad's car, a Mercedes c class AMG.

Finally my mum's car, a Mercedes CLK.

We also use mine or Joe's bedrooms.
Joe's:

Mine (excuse the boxes I was ment to move house this week, but the move has been delayed) :

We went to windsor and spoke to all the managers of the local coffee shops, we also sent them a letter.

We have decided to use Joe's kitchen as its modern and the right size.

textual analysis of a short film.

I have chosen a short film called The black hole by Diamond Dugs.

The black hole is a comedy about a tired and depressed looking office worker, who is photo copying documents, this reinforces the idea that he is a boring office worker carrying out mundane tasks. The photocopier seems to stop working so the man gives it a kick, a page is printed but what is it? A black circle on a piece of paper, a black hole. The film depicts the human races greed that we always want more, but will it pay off?

The film starts with an establishing shot of the office this obviously shows its set in an office, the colour pallet is very drab and grey denoting the depressing scenery. This shot is similar to a shot seen in action films such as batman which challenges the conventions of a comedy. The cinematic shot also seems to contradict the drab scenery off the office as it creates a feel of high action when its just an office. After this shot the way the rest off the film is shot has the feel of a TV advert but for some reason it seems to work. From the off you can see the man is bored and tired, he lazily taps buttons on the photocopier the photocopier stops working. The man kicks it and it prints out a piece of paper with a black circle on it. He dismisses it and put it on the table next to him, the scene so far doesn't appear to stick to any convention of a comedy. The man carries on photocopying, he picks up his drink, drinks it and puts in on the table on top of the paper, the cup disappears the man looks around confused and a slight comedic element is added. The man studies the paper looking around as if he's done something wrong, he reaches inside and pulls the cup back out. The scene still has the advert feel which helps give the film an edge.

Now the comedy starts to kick in, the man walks over to a vending machine puts the paper on the glass and reaches in side and palls out a chocolate bar, is this the first showing off his greed he has used this gift to steal. The man then sets his eyes on a room that says KEEP OUT he uses the black hole to get into the room, the man is pushing the boundaries, this creates suspense as you don't know what he will do next and how far he will push it. The man is in the room and pow there is a safe, the audience already know what he will do. He places the paper on the safe reaches inside and pulls out a wad of money, how greedy will he be? he reaches in 5 more times and on the 6th he finds nothing so he decides to go in. As he passes into the safe the paper falls off trapping him inside, the audience is left with the sound of tapping as the picture fades to black.

The film is very creative and supports the view that humans are greedy and are never satisfied, the man had the chocolate but he wanted more, he got into the locked room but again he wanted more and finally he could of stopped at 1 wad of money but is greedy and this is his down fall. I believe the film sticks to some conventions of a comedy, the characters lack of personality he is similar to Mr Bean and his cheeky stealing of a chocolate bar in its self is funny. The story line how ever is not funny, it has a dark hidden engender suggesting that mans greediness will be our down fall, this is very true as can been seen in the modern world, wars are started for oil. the film throws up hundreds of question about the human race. Overall The black hole is a very creative and thought provoking film unseen in most comedies.

The end of the road!

The Witness is now finished, on saturday we completed editing after an 8 hour day. We had to compact the sequence into 2 minutes but it still looks amazing.

Tuesday 31 March 2009

Moving on up!

Today we set a date for half term where we will finish off all the editing and a tiny bit of filming.

Friday 27 March 2009

ManFlicks our name filming is our game.

We now have an ident, and it will be used on all of our productions.

1,2,3 and to the 4!

Things are picking up now, production day 4 was filmed on the 17th and we had to do some re-takes, after showing the rough edit to our teacher who shot us down when we were flying so high. We had to re-film some of mine and sam's scenes where he spots me in the woods. This time it went well and we sorted out some issues in continuity. We now have to make a new cut.
We took a few pictures and added them to the you tube page.

On the 3rd day of production my true love gave to me...

Well im a bit behind on the blogging. Our 3rd day of production was the 14th of march. We got loads done, we filmed the foot chase with me and sam and the very start of the car chase. The day went really well and pretty much nailed each shot first time thanks to our storyboards. After we filmed we when back to oli's and made a very rough edit of the film and so far we are really pleased.

Monday 16 March 2009

Another successful weekend filming

On saturday we filmed the bulk of our opening sequence all we have left to do is film the car chase. We have done a basic edit of what we have filmed so far and it is looking very good. We got some really good shots and some very professional looking ones.
Because we were filming in a public place it took us ages to film as there were a look of dog walkers and ramblers.

Monday 9 March 2009

Successful weekend filming

Over the weekend we had a very busy weekend shooting the start of our film. We spent most of the digging a grave for our first scene. But after we had dug it we were cooking on gas and got the whole first scene shot. Here are some pictures of the day.

Market Research

26 people filled out our questionnaire the data we got was very pleasing. Once we had gathered our data we put it into a spread sheet and turned it into graphs which displays the data accurately. We put all our collected data into a slide show we used apple's Keynote and numbers to create it.

Market Research Questionnaire

This is the questionnaire we handed round the school to students and teachers.

Tuesday 24 February 2009

So what's next?

We are currently in the process of making a question are so we can carry out some market research so we can get an idea of what our story line should be.

Hermeneutic Codes

For us to give our film a convincing story line we have studied Hermeneutic Codes.

The opening sequence I have chosen the is the first 2minutes of the 2001 thriller vanilla sky, I will address the hermeneutic code theory of how film story lines are constructed. The hermeneutic code is one of six codes laid out by Roland Barthes.
The very start of the opening sequence is an ariel shot of an expensive looking new york apartment this is already maintaining the audiences interest in the film. The camera then cuts to a room it's a simple but hight class looking room, as the camera pans a flat screen tv is seen again this holds the interest of the audience it also teases the audience showing them expensive brand new technology. The camera carries on panning and ends up looking at the main character asleep in bed in the shot an expensive looking music system beside the bed is seen again teasing and holding the audiences attention.
The character, played by Tom Cruise awakes and turns the tv off and the TV sinks into the floor this is a key hermeneutic feature called equivocation meaning a mixture of truth and snare and futurist items. The TV sinking into the floor shows future design and wealth. This grabs the audiences attention again by making them think is the film set in the future. As Tom walks across the room the camera follows him he appears to be an average Joe character living a millionaire life style. It cuts to the bathroom and the character shows how vain he is as he plucks his grey hair. This questions the audience, as they don't know who he is or what he does, is he a model or a playboy millionaire. Again it cuts to a shot of him getting dressed still holding the audience as they want to find out who he was. Once dressed he picks up a rolex watch a stereotypical item of wealthy people, as he picks up the watch he also picks up a huge wod of money confirming his wealth. It cuts again to a shot of him walking out his apartment the camera is fixed and captures how big the apartment is.
The hermeneutic code is still in full use as the shot cuts to a shot of Tom in a Ferrari as he goes to pull out of his car park he looks left and right and the street is empty. A very unusual sight for the centre of newyork this again keeps the viewers interest. As he progresses through the city every street is empty he arrives at times square (the centre of newyork) and even that is empty. The empty city and the not know who he is keeps the audience interested and forces them to keep watching. He gets out the car and starts running, the shot jumps back to the first shot of the scene, exactly the same as it appeared at the start and as it pans down to the bed he jumps awake and the previous scene is represented as a dream.

This is where the two minutes were up. In the scene the audience is taken on a ride of suspense and interest. The opening sequence really sets the tone of the film. The sequence sticks to every rule of the Hermeneutic Code. AS the film progresses it still sticks to the code right up till the end.

Half Term fun location hunting

In half term me and the group went out to do some location hunting, we found 3 locations that we hope to use. Here are some photos we took.

This is a possible location for our forest scene.
